When I thought about what I wanted to name my company, I wanted something that reflected the creator of Pilates in some unique way, but I also did not want to pigeonhole what my company could be.
Ischyra Soma Fitness (ISF) is all about Pilates, let us be clear, but it also offers the Gyrotonic® and Gyrokinesis® methods with plans to add personal training and physical therapy services in the future.
How would I be able to convey all of this in a name?
The creator of Contrology, or Pilates, was Joseph Pilates. His father was a gymnast and a native of Greece. Pilates was infatuated with the classical Greek ideal of a person who is balanced equally in mind, body, and spirit. The vigorous set of physical exercises he created, requires, and develops muscles, strength, balance, coordination, and flexibility which requires a strong body.
The common denominator between all the exercise modalities that ISF offers is they develop and require a strong body. Most people know that “soma” is Latin for body. So, I searched for the Greek word for “strong” and hoped that it was catchy and lyrical. I found the word, “ischyra”.
According to Strong’s Concordance, ischyra (ischuros, ἰσχυρός, ά, όν) is a Greek adjective that means strong or mighty. It is used to denote physical strength (i.e., mighty, powerful, vehement, sure).
